The soundtrack to the show's third season is by far its most adventurous yet, featuring opuses from musical stalwarts like Mozart, Dvorak, Schubert and Sibelius, but also curious new material from modern mavericks like Missy Mazzoli and Nico Muhly. The show creators have not only written and produced a series rich in great storytelling, but one that's cleverly embedded with brilliant classical and opera music that manages to appeal to a millennial audience - no mean feat. Mozart in the JungleĮmmy-winning Amazon Prime series Mozart in the Jungle - which chronicles the lives of a group of struggling musicians in the New York Symphony Orchestra - has quite possibly achieved the impossible. The Get Down also relies on its talented cast and producers, such as Nas, to produce a multitude of original songs. There are classics from the Isley Brothers, The O'Jays, and the Supremes. The show manages to brilliantly convey how a struggling New York at the brink of bankruptcy shaped music genres forever ― giving birth to hip-hop, punk and disco. Set in the 1970s in a broken down and beaten up, cash strapped Bronx, New York City, this Baz Lurhmann series focuses around a young group of teens armed only with verbal games, improvised (but truly incredible) dance moves and spray cans.įrom Bronx tenements, to the bustling SoHo art scene, with scenes even shot in the glass towers of the just-built World Trade Center, The Get Down is an epic saga told through the lives and music of this lovable bunch of South Bronx kids who changed the city, and the world. We can even forgive Anthony Jr's nu-metal phase. The more obsessive viewers (but isn't that all of us?) will also have noticed the repeated use of 'Con te Partiro' - often known as 'Time to Say Goodbye' - as a complement to the trials and tribulations of Tony's long-suffering wife Carmela. There are even key characters played by musicians. More than memorable moments, though, music weaves in and out of the Jersey mafia epic like all the other ties that bind. The Sopranosįrom the iconic use of Xzibit's 'Paparazzi' instrumental to close out the sixth episode of Season 1, to the 'I'll Be Watching You' / 'Peter Gunn' Theme mashup that accompanies the attempted espionage of Season 3's opener, to Christopher stumbling home against Los Lobos' mournful 'The Valley', music and motion are wedded in HBO 's The Sopranos in a way that almost no other show has managed. The show also has a stellar line-up of tracks that even include original music from Sigur Ros. Sure, the instrumental tracks aren't necessarily something you'd want to play at a dinner party, but if you're looking for good vibes to motivate you during mundane daily tasks, the Game of Thrones soundtrack is for you - it's particularly excellent if you want to turn laundry into an epic adventure. Game of Thrones is as much about the tunes as it is about the medieval violence and it seems to get better and better as the series rolls on. We've all heard the theme song, and it's a total banger along with the rest of the music on the cult show. Bring on Season 2, we say! Game of Thrones
As the season rolls on and we fall more in love with the A-list line-up of leading ladies, listen for the sweet sounds of Alabama Shakes, Otis Redding, Sufjan Stevens and Fleetwood Mac.
